The beginning of a new school year used to mean shiny new backpacks adorned with the latest fad and filled with Pee Chee folders and a matching lunch box. Fast forward a few academic levels later, and all I have to show for a new semester is a pile of syllabi more daunting than the hundreds of dollars worth of textbooks that I buckle under.
Despite the abundance of academia headed my way, I'm pretty excited about this new semester because it focuses heavily on my major (Journalism, emphasis in Public Relations).
On the very likely chance that I will not have a chance to blog in the near future, I wanted to give a little run down of what will be occupying my time (instead of interacting with my half dozen followers).
Convergent Journalism:
I'm going to be honest and tell you that I'm actually not sure that this convergence that they speak of is. However, after googling it, I assume that it is the antidote to the 'dying journalism' that people often reference. This class is supposed to teach us about how journalism is actually changing, not dying...and changing into a multimedia cornucopia. Though this sounds riveting (and I just used cornucopia...one of my favorite words), this class might be on the low end of the excitement scale. However, it's necessary for the pulse of pulp to continue, so...here we go.
Philosophy of Journalism:
This class is with my favorite professor, which is always exciting. We'll struggle with the big stuff, like, why do we do what we do? Is there such thing as an unbiased opinion? How/Do I separate faith and ethics?
Contemporary Issues in Media:
Similar to a law class, we'll engage in debates and also learn the legal aspect of journalism. It'll take me back to my mock trial days...Good thing too, since we seem to be fans of stickin it to the man! My professor is all sorts of cool - he used to tour with The Temptations! When he told us this, like good journalism students we demanded proof. Oddly enough, there was a piano in the corner of the classroom (I know, right?) and he played for us! He's totally got the groove.
The Point Magazine:
There's lots of pressure to succeed in this class. Though a mere unit of credit, this class serves as a staff support to our student magazine, which wins awards every publication. Ha no pressure...I'm a bit nervous. But at least I'm not editor! =)
Advanced Public Relations:
Fun times all around! This class (and professor) is totally hands on, and we get to implement a PR campaign for a non-profit of our choice off campus. Can't wait to start planning. Spreadsheets, charts, lists, oh my!
American Lit:
This is my upper div English, and I am SO excited for this class. I'm not sure I've been this enthused about reading and writing since...forever. Also, boyfriend is in this class with me. Fun, but weird. He heads straight for the back corner, while I'm anxious for a seat up front (mostly because I'm too short to see...)
Theology:
I couldn't get away with a semester without Bible classes, so here we go. Deep stuff, but my prof is in love with LOTR, so that makes it a little less painful.
I'm also taking a PE class, and two online classes, for a total of 24 units, but those are not blog worthy.
SO friends, I bid you adieu as I disappear into the abyss of brainery. Keep me sane with a few kind words and the occasional visit. Oh I miss the days of light up shoes and dodgeball....
