Blogging from Bako

I pen this letter – wait, no – I type this blog, from Bakersfield, Ca.

In a month, Boyfriend and I will be in our first wedding together. The lovely couple (let’s call them Bride and Groom Breckenridge) are dear friends who we look up to and love very much. We are completely honored to be a part of the celebratory party, and I often close my eyes, click my heels and wish that the wedding was already here.

But alas, exams, papers, and work must go on before the festivities commence.

I say it like it’s a huge burden, but honestly, I’m enjoying the school part of it immensely. My schedule allows a lot of time for ample studying, a daily workout, and even a few laughs.

I’m doing so much writing, all of it creative (and none of it on this blog), and I wonder when writer’s block will catch up to me.

I’m writing for The Point magazine this year on campus, which is an award winning publication completely run and produced by journ-students. I get to write a fun little piece, but to preserve the sanity of my editors and so as not to heighten your expectations, I won’t spill any beans right now.

This is the first week I haven’t worked, in…two years? I’m in Bakersfield because of Bride Breckenridge’s bridal shower, and it’s such a strange, yet pleasing feeling to not have an obligation this weekend to someone other than myself.

I’ll be posting pictures soon, but for now, my favorite part of this trip so far was this morning’s breakfast. I was sitting and eating on kitchen bar, browsing the NY Times on my laptop. I look behind me, and Bride’s father is sitting on the couch, with his print edition of his newspaper.

Maybe it was a journalism joke to myself, but I loved the whole scenario. I would have taken a picture of us.

Random things:

- Boyfriend participated in his first triathlon this month. It was pouring rain, but he did so well.

- I learned how to use the row machine at the fitness center. This machine looks intimidating, but it’s actually not – though it does tend to leave calluses on my hands.

- I love my housemates. I would describe them as crazy, goofy, and loving.

- This wedding is going to be SO. MUCH. FUN.

two things:

1. i always want to use the rowing machine at the gym too! i'm so proud of you for being brave and doing it. i'll try too!!

2. the nytimes online and in print little scenario made me giggle. i love being a nerdy journalism student with you even though we're far apart.

happy wedding day!

If being a professional bridesmaid was a job, it would be perfect for you. You put so much energy and concern into everything you do and I love that! I also love you but that's a no-brainer. ;)
